At Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, WI, we teach Perl in the first programming course taken by programming and networking majors. We also have an advanced Perl programming class. Though Perl is native to Unix, we generally run Perl in the PC Windows environment, as that is what most of the college's computers run and most students also have Windows PCs at home.

Perl Scripting Tool PRO works well for our students at the college. We suggest that the students download and install the free LE version at home (they obviously can buy the PRO version if they wish). The fact that that the LE version never expires is a plus for our students. And both versions have very minimal system requirements, so they will run on most any PC the student may have at home.

What I like the best is that one can easily edit a program and immediately run it. And students may repeat that process numerous times before their program runs correctly. Using a data projector, we often use PST to demonstrate various Perl coding and debugging techniques to the students, often making code changes and re-running the code numerous times.

When we decided to teach Perl we were going to use Notepad as our editor. But I got sick of having to save my code in Notepad and then run the program in a DOS window, and repeating that process for each code change I made. So one day, I searched the Internet for something better and also something free or inexpensive. And I found Perl Scripting Tool.

We also like the feature that highlights code blocks when one puts the insertion point just ahead of a curly brace and clicks on the Highlight Sub button on the toolbar. This really helps students debug their programs.

Other features we use are cut/copy/paste, the color coding, the go to line feature, running a program with debug from within PST, and the ability to launch Notepad from within PST (we use NotePad to create quick little data files). For class demonstrations using the data projector, we make the PST font size larger, so everyone can easily see the Perl code.

Before I purchased Capturemax , I spent a long time downloading and trying must of the webcam software on the net. Only CaptureMAX met my requirements. It has worked reliably and I am very pleased with it. It will be nice thought to include motion detection feature as I am sure other users will appreciate this feature....
